The Karakoram Highway — known as the KKH — is one of the most breathtaking roads on earth. Stretching over 1,300 kilometers through Pakistan's towering mountain ranges, it connects Islamabad to the Chinese border, passing through Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza Valley, and the legendary Khunjerab Pass.
For adventure seekers, it is a dream. For solo travelers, it can also be a challenge.
In the summer of 2024, Ahmad Raza — a 28-year-old solo traveler from Lahore — decided to trek sections of the KKH on his own. What he didn't expect was how much one small device in his bag would change his experience on the road.
On his third day past Gilgit, Ahmad set up camp near a remote stretch of road after sunset. The nearest town was nearly 40 minutes away. There were no other travelers in sight.
Around midnight, he heard rustling near his tent. When he stepped outside, he found two stray dogs circling his campsite — both aggressive, teeth showing.
"I had no idea what to do," Ahmad later wrote in his travel journal. "I shouted, I clapped, nothing worked. Then I remembered the stun gun I had packed almost as an afterthought."
One brief activation — the sharp electric crackle was enough. Both dogs backed off immediately and disappeared into the dark. Ahmad packed up and drove to the next town, shaken but unharmed.
"That sound alone was a deterrent. I didn't have to touch either animal. It was over in seconds."
The Karakoram Highway is unlike any other road in Pakistan. Its beauty is matched by its remoteness. Here is why solo travelers need to think seriously about personal safety:
Many stretches of the KKH have little to no mobile signal and can go hours without passing traffic. If something goes wrong — whether it's an animal encounter, harassment, or an emergency — help is not nearby. A stun gun gives you an immediate response option that doesn't depend on a signal or another person.
Stray dogs are extremely common along the KKH, particularly near small villages and campsites. In more elevated regions, encounters with wild animals are also possible. A stun gun offers a non-lethal deterrent that protects both you and the animal.
Solo travelers — especially those who are young, female, or visibly foreign — can attract unwanted attention on remote routes. Having a visible or accessible self-defense tool significantly changes how confidently you move and how others perceive your preparedness.
Unlike urban Pakistan, the remote sections of the KKH have minimal law enforcement presence. You are largely responsible for your own safety. A stun gun fills that gap without requiring a license or special training.
If you're planning a solo trip along the Karakoram Highway, here is how to carry and use a stun gun responsibly:
When asked if he would travel the KKH again, Ahmad didn't hesitate.
"Absolutely. But I'll always have my stun gun with me. It's not about fear — it's about being smart. The KKH is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I just want to enjoy it without worrying about what happens when I'm alone in the dark."
